It’s 82nd birth anniversary of Nuclear Scientist Wazed Mia

This is February 16; the 82nd birth anniversary of eminent nuclear scientist and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's husband Dr. MA Wazed Mia. The day is celebrated from early morning through a series of rituals like paying tributes, remembrance, Fatehapath, Milad Mahfil, distribution of food among the poor and so on.

In the morning, events like Doa Mahfil, discussion meeting, food distribution took place in the premises of Joy Sadan. In the afternoon, a commemoration was organized by the upazila administration and a special prayer was held in the Upazila Jame Masjid. After Juma prayers, a Milad Mahfil took place and in the afternoon a memorial prayers and Milad was held at the party office.

Recitation from the whole of the holy Quran was completed under the initiative of the District Commissioner; the event was implemented in the Gopinathpur Hafizia Madrasa and Orphanage. Quality food was also served to the students. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Iqbal Hasan and Upazila Awami League general secretary and late scientist's nephew mayor Tajimul Islam Shamim ensured the implementation of these programs.

The Pirganj Constituency MP and Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury was present on the occasion of Dr.MA Wazed Mia's 82nd birthday organized by the Upazila administration at Upazila Parishad Auditorium.

Wazed Mia passed matriculation from Rangpur Zilla School in 1956 and Intermediate from Rajshahi Government College in 1958. He passed his MSc in Physics from Dhaka University in 1962. In 1967, he received a higher doctorate degree from Durham University in London. He was the chairman of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission. 

While studying at Dhaka University, he was a resident student of Fazlul Haque Hall and was elected as the Vice-President of the Hall Student Council for the 1961-62 academic year as a candidate of the Chhatra League. In 1962, he was arrested in the anti-education commission movement. He joined the then Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission on 1 April 1963. In the academic year 1963-64, he completed the 'Diploma of Imperial College Course' from Imperial College, London with merit.

Wazed Mia spent seven years in exile with his wife Sheikh Hasina after the brutal assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15, 1975. Like Bangabandhu's two daughters Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, she too was subjected to various oppressions by the post-'75 military regime. After his death, according to his last wish, his body was buried next to the graves of his parents in Fatehpur village of Pirganj Upazila.

The late scientist authored two books on physics, applied physics and engineering for undergraduate students of universities.

His book titled 'Bangalbandhu Sheikh Mujibke Ghire Kichhu Ghatona o Bangladesh' was published in January 1993 and another book titled 'Bangladesher Rajniti o Sarkarer Chalchitra' was published in February 1995 by University Press Limited.

To recall the memory of the visionary scientist and an internationally renowned nuclear scientist, Dr. Wazed Research Institute has been established at Rangpur Begum Rokeya University. The largest science center in South Asia, MA Wazed Mia Science Research Center has also been established under the Jahangirnagar University.
